The word lexicon derives from the Greek λεξικόν, a neuter form related to λεξικός, meaning “of or for words.” This comes from λέξις, meaning “speech,” “expression,” or “word,” and ultimately from λέγω, meaning “I say,” “I speak,” or “I tell.” A lexicon, therefore, is not merely a dictionary.
